Bitcollider Usage

See the download page for installers and an overview of what the Bitcollider utility does.

Windows

After running the installer, you may invoke it on a file or files in 4 ways:
  1. Drag and drop one or more files atop the "Bitcollider" icon on your desktop.
  2. Launch the Bitcollider by double-clicking, bringing up the Bitcollider dialog. You may then drag and drop files to this window, or use the "Browse" button to select files.
  3. Right-click on any file in the Windows Explorer desktop, and choose the "Bitzi Lookup" option.
  4. At a command-prompt, use the "bitcollider.exe" program with the file or files you want to report/lookup as arguments. (Invoking bitcollider.exe with no arguments will display command-line options.)

Linux

After installing, you should invoke the "bitcollider" executable with any files you want to report/lookup as arguments.

If Bitcollider is unable to launch your default web browser to complete the lookup/submit, you can Invoked with no arguments, it will print options:

Bitcollider/0.6.0 (b1020)

Usage: bitcollider [options] [file|dir] ...
       bitcollider [options] -f

Options:
-p - print the submission info, without submitting
-n - show submission in browser, without submitting
-u [url] - send submission to alternate URL
-e [ext] - treat file as if it had a given extension
-d - debug print during plugin loading
 -r - recurse into directories.
-a - analyze all files for a given directory.
(Default is to analyze only known extensions)
-f - read tags from instead of analyzing
 --md5 - calculate MD5
 --crc32 - calculate CRC32

Mac OS X

Currently, Mac OS X users must build the Bitcollider from the source tarball, and then 'bitcollider' is usable from the command line, as for Linux.

(We would appreciate advice on the proper packaging of a precompiled bitcollider for easy installation and drag-and-drop use on Mac OS X.)

Troubleshooting

By far the most common problem people encounter when using the Bitcollider is that after analyzing a local file, it fails to launch the default web browser for a lookup/submission.

After checking or refreshing your computer's default browser settings, if Bitcollider still does not automatically submit properly, a workaround is to open the submission file manually using your browser's File -> Open (File) option .

On Windows, the submission file will be in:

C:\Documents and Settings\[USERNAME]\Local Settings\Temp\bitprint.htm

On Linux, the submission file will be in:
/tmp/bitprint.html
