Bitzi General Discussion: searches

searches   [forward as email]
It would reduce traffic (from me) on your site if I had the ability to either:

1) limit search results by filesize

2) limit search results by media type (avi/mp3/mpg etc)

3) user regex searching (or at least boolean "a +b -c")

It is a waste of resources (yours and mine) to transmit and then have to weed through 50+ useless results that could easily be eliminated by any of those suggestions above.

Another suggestion: Currently, ratings shown in Search page are highlighted with a background colour (good thing) if the rating is NOT 0...

If the rating IS 0, but there have been ratings on that file, then I also reccommend that the background be coloured for this case as well.

Often I will search, and find a file that several people rated as acceptable/valid, but has a rating of 0 still, so it is overlooked easily in search lists.

If the rating is 0 because no one has rated it yet, then by all means, don't colour it.

This site is a great resource for those of us in the p2p community, so please keep up the good work!

Re: searches   [forward as email]
Excellent suggestions. I expect to implement all of them apart from regex searches. Sorry, I can't make any promises regarding when they'll be available. Thanks!

Search only finds terms if set off by spaces   [forward as email]
Exammple: submit file

"BeautifulCellistDoesDvorak.mpg"

Try it. If you are the first one submitting this, subsequent searches on "cellist" or "dvorak" will not pick this file up. Worse still, if you notice the search isn't picking up your submission and you try to fix it by submitting alternate file names or additional metadata, the search STILL will not pick this up.

I think bitzi is a cool idea, but this is a major oversight that will prevent people from finding stuff they want. A lot of people take spaces out of file names as a matter of habit.

Fix this ASAP.

Re: searches   [forward as email]
Adding another filename with spaces should resolve the issue -- except that it can take up to a day for all such info attached to a Ticket to be full-text indexed.

Would you suggest we virtually break filenames at capitalization transitions -- to feed the full-text indexer with discreet tokens? Or do you just want a search mode where any substring matches, irrespective of whitespace/words?

(AFAIK, even Google wouldn't find "BeautifulCellistDoesDvorak" with the search "beautiful cellist does dvorak".)
