Bitzi General Discussion: bitzi misconception: misleading filenames

bitzi misconception: misleading filenames   [forward as email]
It is possible to rate a FILE (bitprint) as

"dangerous/misleading".

THIS MAKES NO SENSE!

A filename can be misleading, a file cannot!

Example:

After downloading "Minority Report 2of2.avi" I discovered the file contained really the first part of the movie Showtime with Eddy Murphy.

Now, the filename "Minority Report 2of2.avi" was very misleading indeed, but the file itself (identified by bitprint) is perfectly okay. It just needs to be associated with a correct filename.

But unfortunately when I search for "Showtime" the file shows up with a bad rating just because somebody hat once named it "Minority Report 2of2.avi" !

You need to distinguish clearly between filecontent-rating ("Is that file good quality, no dropouts etc?")

and filename-to-content-association-rating

("Does this filename properly describe the content?").

After all that's what bitprints are about.

We introduced them so we could rate/identify the file INDEPENDENTLY OF by-chance filenames.

Greetings,

Archmage

an executable that contains a trojan can

be considered misleading...if you download

program x.exe, program x could work just

fine but could contain a trojan that does

bad things at the same time without you

knowing it...thus misleading could be an

apt description.

as far as bad filenames - just go to the

"full detail view" of the bitprint of the

file. rate the 'name' tag. give the false

name a rating of --. create your own tag

with the correct name. give it a rating

of +. that's the right way to go about it,

imo. if someone is downgrading the file

instead of the 'name' tag, they're doing

it wrong, imo.

Re: bitzi misconception: misleading filenames   [forward as email]
I'm really pleased that you understand the distinction between a file and its filename so well. Too many people judge files badly when what they really mean is that the filename is incorrect.

As reflector pointed out, a file itself can be misleading, for some definition of misleading. For practical purposes, I think most people would be glad to see a "misleading" judgement on files that are intended to be just that, though you could make a philosophical point that the file itself is ok, so long as the filename is "looping website advertisement.avi", for example.

While you've probably read it, others interested in background on judging files should read How To Judge Files and Tags. Actually any good bitizen should read this, and take heed. :-)

Thanks!

Re: bitzi misconception: misleading filenames   [forward as email]
I have to admit I'm one of the people who have rated files as misleading when it juat has the wrong name. I didn't inherently know that the rating was for the actual file as opposed to it's name matching what the file actually is.

I agree.. there should be another description in the rating system for such files as these.

"misleading file name" then leave the space for what the file really is.

Yeah, I've been known to make the mistake of rating a file as misleading by its filename too, before I knew better. What I'd like to know is, is it possible for me to edit/remove my ratings where I made this error? If so what do I have to do?

Currently you can't retract a rating, but you can re-rate (and re-comment) on the file -- and your newer rating will replace the old.
