Create Bitpedia entry possible without Bitcollider?   [forward as email]
Is there any way to enter an ED2K link as a false one without having the entire file?

A certain file I recently started downloading turned out to be totally another type of file when I previewed it. The original file was quite desirable, but the file it turned out to be would be desirable to very few people.

If I have an ED2K link that I know is misleading is there any way I can enter that link into Bitpedia without having the entire file?

If you use ED2K links, you should be aware that the link itself determines what file you download. The file name itself is unimportant, and can be anything you or anyone else chooses to name the file. There are many improperly named files out there, so when you download in eMule or whatever program you use, you should always right click on the file, select "Details", and have a look at the names of the file as they are being shared in other clients. When you notice a disparity in file names, you may be downloading a file you do not want. Some of the other tabs in the details section may be able to help you determine what the file type is, and perhaps other details.

Visit emule-project.net and read their help forums in the Quick Help and Guides section.

Hi tlg:

I thank you very much for the reply, but the basic question has not been answered. Is it possible to enter data into the Bitpedia without using Bitcollider ... only having the ED2K link?

You have described an alternate method of fake detection. The details you provide are absolutely correct and I do use the file name query mechanism you mention.

It does not cover the situation where a brand new file is being offered by many sources specifically to deceive the person downloading (MPAA/PORN spammers/etc). You take a prior video with ironic content vis-a-vis the title that is absolutely not the content being offered and lop off a bit of the film with an open source or pay for video editing tool and give the file a new deceptive name. EXAMPLE - documentary about changing potash into fertilizer becomes "Transformers cam 2007.avi" .

The downloader comes along and starts grabbing the film with preview sections first and is able to see after a preview that the content is a potash documentary.

Your method, tlg, requires the downloader to rename the content as it is being downloaded (or provide notes/comments/ratings) and To_Keep_The 700 MB Incomplete_File_On_The_Disk_Forever And To_Forever_(24*7)_Stay_Connected_And_Offering_That_"Content." Wouldn't the majority (or maybe all?) folks cancel the download and delete the file?

I am looking for a way to enter just the ED2K link into the Bitpedia to characterize the content as a purposeful fake.

Thanks,

Pete

Sorry for the delay in answering your question.

If an entry already exists, you can add corrected metadata tags or a rating.

However, to create the initial entry, the specific SHA1 hash (at least) is needed, and of course you need the whole file to calculate that.

We could consider providing a way to tag files when only one identifier is available in a future site revision. There would be other risks of confusion and abuse to consider though.

(For example: if you get a bad first 10% of a file that you believe has a certain full-file SHA1 value, it's not fair to lable/rate the full SHA1 based on that fragment -- unless you have the whole thing, even your software can't be sure that 10% really fits into that SHA1. Other identifiers, including TigerTree, ed2k, and bittorrent are at least a little better in this regard, in that software can be sure certain ranges fit within the whole.)

Hope this helps and thanks for your interest in Bitzi.
