Bitzi General Discussion: Is it just me or is Bitzi the slowest site ever?

I have SUPER FAST DSL and I've never come across a site soooo slow. It doesn't stop me from rating or posting files but I'd definately contribute to the discussions board and other things on here ALOT more if they could speed it up a bit. I swear their servers are on dial-up.

It's a bit faster if you only use this one browser-window window and have no p2p app running. At least in my case :)

Bitzi is a very slow response site. It's a pity because it probably slows its development by driving away a great lot of its users. DanC

You are so right! It takes about 3 min for a Bitzi site/result to materialize, & I'm on dsl @ 100Mbps. I'm no PK Tech girl, but if the problem is too many users, maybe we could borrow a solution from SETI? People log in to a site and a small part of their bandwith is used to search for signals from space. If this is the problem, is this solution do-able?

It's extremely slow and frustrating. And as someone said earlier in this thread, it drives away new, enthusiastic users who would like to help this project, but just can't spend days, hours, waiting for the Bitzi servers to keep spitting out messages of "try again in 10 seconds."

Sorry, folks ... if you want to do this right one day, you'll have a great following. But this isn't the way to do it. You can make excuses that people have "other software running" at the same time; I have seen them posted here before. I don't buy it. Given the nature of the Bitzi site, you should make allowances for other software running when you configure your servers.

Also, all sorts of apologies are made on the front page about needing cookies enabled. Mine are enabled. I have no problems staying logged in to any other web site except this one. Why is that? I have even deleted all cookies and started over. I don't know why this web site is so flaky.

I have also run across trying to put in a new file name, having it want me to press the "confirm" button ... good, I got that far ... and then it freeze and tell me the Bitzi server is busy. It will repeatedly let me enter the file name and get the "confirm" screen, but then apparently switches me over to another server and is unable to complete my request.

Due to the many frustrations of attempting to help others, with very little to show for it ... I am doubtful whether I will be contributing much here. Too bad, as a site like this is needed. But it takes too much time with too little results. If I can't report the 10 file names I just found that need reporting, how accurate is it anyway? I'm also stymied in that they don't even offer basic Mac OS X software. I saw Bitzi won some sort of newcomer award a few years ago. Too bad it did not build on its early success.

Yes, the site is way too slow. Don't worry, we're not going to blame other software on your machine or your broadband connection. It seems to be a bottleneck in our backend master database.

We're trying to identify what triggers the worst hangups -- it might be associated with when we're being heavily crawled by search engines, and when giant multiple-submissions come in.

We've got a new faster server coming in this month, but it may become home for some new services that can scale better, rather than deployed to speed up the old database.

missy_bitzi: Your problem with not staying logged-in is a new report; only when the web server is restarted should you need to re-login. (Such restarts usually happen much less often than once per week.) If you're seeing many 'you need to login' or 'cookies must be enabled' messages at inconvenient times, please send more details, so we can track down what's wrong.

If you manage to proceed several steps into a contribution, but then hit a failure, it's not so much that you're hitting a different server, as trying to make a permanent change to the main database, which appears to be the most bottlenecked system.

We hear you, and apologize for the problems. We'll keep trying to optimize and streamline key processes for faster response.
