Bitzi: Overview Diagram

Bitzi Overview

Bitzi is a website where people cooperate to identify, describe, and discover files of all types, and in so doing help build Bitpedia, the digital media encyclopedia.

With Bitzi and Bitpedia:

  • You can look up descriptions, comments, and ratings about your files – or contribute such info yourself
  • Our precise digital fingerprints match info to exact files, so you can distinguish between similar files and search for the very best versions
  • File-sharing tools can assure you of a file's contents before you begin downloading
  • Infected or mislabeled files can be flagged, and so discovered or ignored before doing any harm

Bitpedia is an open resource built by a community of fans, developers, and creators. To get started:

  • Learn more about our mission
  • Sign up – this is a prerequisite for full participation, such as contributing your own descriptions and ratings

Lookup Files & Contribute

To report files you already have – to see what Bitpedia knows about them or add your own contributions – you can use our Bitcollider utility, which can calculate a file's distinctive digital fingerprint (or "bitprint").

(Because Bitcollider lookups often trigger a contribution of new information to Bitpedia, it helps to sign in before using the Bitcollider.)

A growing number of other programs offer hooks into Bitzi data to assist their users.

More About Bitzi

  Key Bitzi Links
  • The Bitcollider: Our utility to analyze and reliably identify your local files.
  • Our Bitizens: The active community which makes it all possible.
  • The Search page: Find files in Bitpedia, based on their descriptions.
  • Our Forums: Ask questions, suggest improvements, report problems.
  • Our Metadata readings: Get background material on the rising importance of "data about other data."
  • The Bitpedia digital media encyclopedia: Our commitment to sharing the contributed data back to the community which helped create it.
  • The Developer area: All the info you need to use Bitzi features and data in your own projects.
  • Bitzi provides an essential utility for the world of effortless and decentralized digital distribution: a cooperative community reference work for all kinds of digital files – music, software, books, images, videos – anything and everything.

We accept user-contributed metadata about interesting files. Metadata is literally "data about data" – information which helps identify, distinguish, classify, describe, compare, or otherwise contextualize other information.

We also manage a cooperative peer-review and ratings process, so that the most accurate and useful contributed metadata becomes prominent, and bad information recedes from view.

    So with Bitzi:

    • If you have a file, you can use Bitzi to find out more about it – what it contains, where it came from, what other people think about it, and more. You can also contribute your knowledge or opinions about the file, to help improve Bitpedia for everyone.
    • If you seek a file, you can search the contributed descriptions, rankings, and comments to help discover what file or files will match your needs.
We do not store, transmit, or link to files themselves.

Bitzi is an open resource. The comprehensive reference work that we compile, thanks to the generous efforts of our users, is offered back to the net community for reuse elsewhere, as a compilation or in parts, at no charge. So please look around, try things out, and share your feedback in our website forums or the bitpedia-l project discussion list.

    Thanks for visiting!
